Setting up a New Linux Developer Box

As many developers are already aware of, the best operationg system for web development is undoubtedly Linux. It's also perfect for web and file hosting. Unfortunately, it did take me some time to get used to it in respect to doing everything with it. And now, over 10 years after starting out with linux, I'm providing web consultation for a major financial internet business based in South Florida.

And I must say, the first day there was great even excluding all of the friendly people around. But the height of my first day, was having my machine setup and being able to get comfortable in my work area right away.

They are the first company I've worked with, that provides linux boxes to the developers. Maybe I'm just getting my feet wet in this industry and haven't caught up with companies like this one yet. Or maybe it's just been a while since I've been in an enviromnent that is as similar as that one. Whatever it is, it felt good to have a system ready to go right away. And it gave me an idea on what to do in a year or so when NMTeck starts bringing full time developers.

Another thing that surprised me was the installation had nothing in it. You would think that there were a bunch of programs that you need to use that other developers already use. Not the case. The main thing a developer needs is to be able to do is open a program to edit files, a local environment to do QA testing and a way to push the changes to the live server or merge changes with the repository.

Here are the things that are installed on my machine so that I can work comfortably in my own workspace and sync with the team regularly:

  • Ubuntu 10.04.1
  • PHP 5.3.2
  • Apache 5.3.2
  • MySql 5.1.41

Thinking about for sure getting a Linux setup at home. Say goodbye to Windows. Everything gonna be Linux or OSX from here on out.
